Lomi: Hawaiian Massage

Hawaiian Massage, also known as Lomi, offers a variety of styles rooted in ancient Hawaii. Each clan developed their own unique approach. The style I’ve studied and now practice with love is the Temple Style, a lineage traced back to Kahu Abraham Kawai’i. My journey towards this art of touch was and is being guided by my beloved teacher, Kabiro, to whom I’m deeply grateful.

The Temple Style

The Temple Style is known for its long strokes, underbody work, and full body runs. We make extensive use of our lower arms, the “tool”.

The idea is to create movement in the physical body and stir the emotional systems. The practitioner therefore must apply all his moves with dynamism, fluency and precision.

To achieve this fluency and ease, a significant part of our practice is dedicated to the “flying” (Ka’aleleau), a dance figure we incorporate throughout large portions of the massage.

Lomi in Ancient Hawaii

In the rich cultural tradition of Hawaii, the Kahuna revered Lomi Lomi Nui as a sacred healing art and a rite of initiation. This ancient practice, often spanning several days, involved four- or six-handed massage synchronized with the rhythmic accompaniment of singers and drummers, leading into states of heightened consciousness.

The recipient of this transformative ritual was thus prepared for significant life transitions, be it adulthood, marriage, assuming leadership of the clan, or even the final journey of death. Lomi supports the receiver in letting go of old patterns and openly embrace what is now wanting to happen with one.

The ALOHA Spirit

As the ceremony commences, I will vocalize a pule, a traditional Hawaiian chant. This chant is a prayer, a call for ancestral wisdom to invite and hold space for the ALOHA spirit. ALOHA, encompasses many facets, it is unconditional love – a love that is joyful, deep and compassionate.

In my experience, both, as a giver and a receiver of Lomi, at some moment in the second half of the ceremony, the presence of this energy suddenly becomes very perceivable. And this is really huge to me. In the humblest manner, I aspire to be a conduit, crafting this space where healing and transformation occurs.

The oil is the transmitter

We consider the oil to be a conduit of energy, originating from the earth and cascading from the sky, channeled through the practitioner into the individual on the table. Each time the practitioner anoints their hand with oil, they breathe the „Ha“, life force, onto the oil before applying it to the recipient’s body.

I use cold-pressed organic coconut oil. It’s low amounts of unsaturated fatty acids provide the hight fluidity whicht we need to perform the long strokes and full body runs. Beyond that it serves as an ideal skincare solution, particularly for sun-exposed skin which easily might be the case here in the Carribean.

Intimacy

Lomi usually is being received naked. This allows for the full body runs, underbody work and long strokes. The intimate area is being covered by a sheet all the time. If you feel more comfortable, you can leave your pants on.

The tissue of as female percieved breasts and the nipples are not included in the massage, whereas the intercostals of the upper chest, a pressure massage of the upper pectorali and the sternum are included. It is very important that you feel comfortable and secure all the time. When you turn face up, you can cover your breasts with a cloth that I will provide, I can easily adopt all moves accordingly. Please tell me if there are any parts of your body you do not want me to touch at all or only with specific care. 

My Way to Lomi

My name is Daniel. In 2022, I first experienced the transformative power of Lomi Lomi Nui. This sparked my desire to learn this stunning body work and share its benefits with others.

My consistent practice and learning culminated in an intensive 10-day training in November 2023 under the guidance of my beloved renowned teacher, Kabiro.

To receive Lomi sessions there and experience what Lomi is capable to do, was mind-blowing. One of these experience I will never forget. It changed me.

I hope, to be able one day, to provide a similar experience to the people who come to me for a Lomi Ceremony.

Nestled amidst the untamed beauty of nature, the Kuan Yin Temple offers a tranquil escape for those seeking a Lomi Lomi Nui massage. The temple’s proximity to the wilderness ensures that each Lomi ceremony is accompanied by the harmonious sounds of the jungle, enhancing the therapeutic experience.

Depending on the moscito situation and other bookings, your massage might as well take place in a healing hut, situated 30 meters before the temple, right-hand side.
